Shoe Shopping Season

Pair of Child Kid Shoes

Children's ShoesShopping for childrens shoes can be a daunting task. As children grow from toddler to young adult, their shoe needs change. For parents looking to find nice, new pairs of shoes for their children, this is the time. However, many parents seem to do their shoe shopping the wrong way, ending up with footwear that isn’t good for their child.

The wrong pair of shoes can cause pain and contribute to a variety of problems, like blisters and ingrown toenails.  Shopping for shoes the right way is important for setting your children’s feet up for success this year. Make sure the shoe fits and is made well. Here are some things to keep in mind:

Children’s feet grow rapidly – Have your child’s feet measured before picking out a size, since they have probably grown since the last time you picked out shoes. Footwear needs to be long and wide enough. Try to keep half an inch of space between the toe tips and the ends of the shoes. Your child’s heel should be able to move in the back of the shoe, but without slipping out. If a pair isn’t comfortable the moment your child first puts it on to walk around, it isn’t a good pair.

Well-made pairs last longer and fit better – Well-constructed shoes that have been designed for your child’s activities are important as well. Look for footwear made from breathable materials so air circulates around the foot. The outer sole should be made with rubber or some other flexible, non-slippery substance. Make sure the insole has plenty of cushion to help absorb shock from running around. Keep the heels low and arches supported as well.
